The QC Inspector shall initial /date by the Weld Filler Material Log entry for which verification is pe rfonned.

3.2 SURVEILLANCE INSPECTIONS The following random inspections shall be perfonned by the QC Inspector.

The frequency of these inspections shall be determined by the Quali ty Control Supervisor or his designee.

l 3.2.1 FIT UP On a random tes is,

the QC Ins pector shall ve ri fy the following:

a.

The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and free of moisture, rus t, oil, grease, or any type of protective l

('

coating. Cleaning may be accomplished by wire brushing, l

filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be removed by a s todda rd solvent, "Varsol"," or approved equal.

b.

Misma tch (for butt joints) does not exceed 1/8 incn.

c.

The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the amount of separation.

d.

For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabrication drawing or applicable welding procedure.

e.

Tack welds which are to be incorporated into the final weld meet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.

Defective tacks shall be repaired or removed.

3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that preheat is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure.

Prehea t should be measured with temperature indicating crayons or approved equal.

3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERIAL VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference 1-C.

AUG23 E 3 of 5 3.3 VISUAL INSPECTION 3.3.1 Fit-up Inspection A fit-up ins pection shall be perfomed for all full penetration welds.

3.3.2 Final Weld Inspection After completion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify that the welder has permanently marked the weld with nis ID symbol adjacent to the weld. The welder ID shall be recorded l

on the IR, or Cons truction Traveler as applicable.

The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for the following:

All welds required by drawing are completed and that no additional welds have been added without approval of the Design Engineer.

(

The following visual weld inspection criteria shall be used when verifying acceptability:

1)

All welds are free from cracks and slag or slag inclusions.

2)

Thorough fusion exis ts be tween weld metal and base metal.

3)

All craters shall be filled to the full cross section of the weld.

4)

Welds shall be free from overlap.

5)

Weld undercut shall not exceed 1/32 inch.

6)

Weld profiles shall be in accordance with Figure 1.

l 7)

The sum of diameters of piping poros i ty shall not exceed 3/8 inch in any linear inch of weld and shall not exceed 3/4 inch in any 12 inch length of weld.

l l

8)

Area of interest is free of arc strikes in accordance with Reference 1-F.

Fillet weld sizes shall be checked with a fillet weld gage (fibremetal or equivalent).

The weld size shown on the drawing shall be the minimum required weld size, except that fillet welds in any single continuous weld shall be permitted to be 1/16" undersize (wi thout correction) provided that the portion of undersized i

weld does not exceed 10% of the total weld length.

NOTE:

Welds which do not meet the above size requi rements shall be corrected.

If condi tions are not correctable, they shall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-E.

The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are repaired by removing the weld material as required by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air ca rbon arc gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewelding.

(

NOTE:

The extent of weld metal cracks shall be ascertained by acid etching, MT, or other equally positive means.

The weld mbtal shall be removed 2 inches beyond the end of the crack before rewel ding.

3.4 WELD REPAIR Weld repair shall be perfortned and documented in accordance with Reference 1-I.

3.5 BASE METAL DEFECTS Base metal defects shall be repo rted in accordance with Reference 1-0.

3.6 DISCREPANCIES Discrepancies found during insepction shall be documemnted on the IR and/or a NCR per Reference 1-G and 1-E respectively, as directed by the QA/QC Supervisor.
