Dear Mr. Duncan:

On November 14, 2006, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) submitted an application forlicense renewal of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (HNP). As part of theenvironmental review for license renewal, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffconducted an environmental site audit at the HNP during the week of June 4, 2007. In advanceof the audit, NRC staff submitted (by letter dated May 21, 2007) a list of information that wouldfacilitate the staff's review during the environmental site audit. We appreciate the efforts ofyour staff to make the requested information available during the audit.During the staff's review of the information, and based on discussions with your staff, we haveidentified areas where additional information is needed to complete our review. Enclosed is alist of requested information. The enclosure includes a list of documents referenced in theEnvironmental Report that the staff needs to evaluate to complete its review; the enclosure alsocontains the staff's requests for additional information in the form of numbered questions.Additionally, the NRC staff held a telephone conference call on July 11, 2007, with members ofyour staff to discuss a potential revision of the SAMA analysis for HNP. CP&L staff indicatedthat an amendment to the application to correct the SAMA analysis will be submitted to theNRC by the end of August 2007.
