REQUESTS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW FOR SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. MD3611)

Dear Mr. Duncan:

On November 14, 2006, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) submitted an application for license renewal of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (HNP). As part of the environmental review for license renewal, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted an environmental site audit at the HNP during the week of June 4, 2007. In advance of the audit, NRC staff submitted (by letter dated May 21, 2007) a list of information that would facilitate the staffs review during the environmental site audit. We appreciate the efforts of your staff to make the requested information available during the audit.

During the staffs review of the information, and based on discussions with your staff, we have identified areas where additional information is needed to complete our review. Enclosed is a list of requested information. The enclosure includes a list of documents referenced in the Environmental Report that the staff needs to evaluate to complete its review; the enclosure also contains the staffs requests for additional information in the form of numbered questions.

Additionally, the NRC staff held a telephone conference call on July 11, 2007, with members of your staff to discuss a potential revision of the SAMA analysis for HNP. CP&L staff indicated that an amendment to the application to correct the SAMA analysis will be submitted to the NRC by the end of August 2007.

R. J. Duncan II We request that you provide your response to this request within 30 days of the date of this letter, in order to support the license renewal review schedule. If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-415-4049 or via e-mail at shq@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
