Mr. J. C. McKinley Staff Assistant - ACRS Atomic Energy Commission 1717 H Street Washington, D. C. 20545

Dear Mr. McKinley:

I In response to your request, the following will serve as a summary of my thoughts regarding last week's meeting with representatives of Consumer's Power and their associates.

It is my feeling that because of the depth at which the solution mining of salt is being carried on at Mid-land by the Dow Chemical Company and because of the con-servative manner in which the solution field has been developed, that there is not a problem with regard to any of the expected subsidence being accompanied by off-sets at the surface.

However, the incomplete nature of the data prehented,to date, and the somewhat limited scope of the calculations that have been made, indicate to me that w:e must have a fuller presentation of the existing data and more complete application of the exist-ing subsidence theories to this data before final judg-ment is made.

I believe that particular attention should be paid to any possible calculations that would give some idea of the stress levels that might be de-veloped at or near the surface of the bedrock by salt solution at depth.

Very truly yours, i
