SUMMARY
OF JUNE 16, 2004, ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING On June 16, 2004 at 7:00 p.m., an annual assessment meeting was conducted at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn in Swedesboro, NJ, between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Public Service Electric Gas Co. (PSEG). The NRC requested the meeting with PSEG management to discuss: (1) NRCs annual assessment of the safety performance at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations; (2) results of PSEG assessments of the work environment at those facilities (assessment results were provided in a PSEG letter dated May 21, 2004); and (3) the action plan currently being developed by PSEG to address the results of the assessments.
The NRC presented and discussed its assessment of the safety performance of Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations for the period between January 1 through December 31, 2003. The NRC presentation included background on each of the units performance assessment results and an overview of NRC activities for calendar year 2004. As part of this regulatory performance meeting, PSEG presented an overview of their performance including the results of their assessments of the work environment at both stations. In addition, PSEG discussed in detail their action plan to address these assessments, including actions to improve the work environment and other actions to strengthen the work management and corrective action programs.
Local officials and members of the public observed this meeting and were offered an opportunity to communicate with the NRC regarding the assessment of PSEGs performance at both Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations, and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations. At the end of the meeting, the NRC answered questions for approximately one and one-half hours.
