* r A. DESCRIPTION Mechanical Shock Arrestors manufactured by Pacific Scientific.
Anaheim, California,'are devices used to prevent s eis mic shock forces from causing da= aging motions in piping and related systems. The arrestors, purely mechanical in design, control such motion by becoming load carrying members between the piping or related systens and building structure when M                  a force sufficient to caus's abnormal motion is initiated.
.M                  This potentially da= aging notion is arrested and absorbed to acceptable 11=its. During nor=al thermal expansion or contraction of the piping or related systems the arrestors i
telescope freely in either direction through their full operating stroke.
B. The following information is applicable to allfarrestors.
(1) PACKACING All arrestors manufactured by Pacific Scientific are
'                        packaged in accordance with American National Standards ANSI N45.2.2-1972 (Packaging, Shipping. Receiving.
Storage and Handling of Ita=s for Nuclear Power Plants (During Contruction Phase)), Level C which in essence states:  "itens shall be protected from exposure to
'}                        salt spray, rain, dust, dirt, and other airborne and windblown contasinants".        To insure compliance with ANSI N45.2.2-1972    Pacific Scientific has generated I3                        in-house packaging documents covering the various 4                      sizes of arrestors. Larger containers than those indicated below are custenized if welded extensions or lengths of pipe are included.
]                      All arrestors, except Model PSA-100, are entirely or l                      partially enclosed in plastic covers. Models PSA-1/4 i                      PSA-1/2 and PSA-1 are individually packaged in corru-gated boxes lined with R200 Cushion-Pak barrier material.
l                      or equivalent, with accessories, if any, protected by 1200 cushion-Pak placed in the end of the box.
l                    Models PSA-3 and -10 are packaged in corrugated boxes, one item per box, and supported in the box with end pads and a center pad consisting of five thicknesses of 1/4"
,                    corrugated fiber board bonded together. Accessories, r
if any, are protetted by R200 Cushion-Pak, or equivalent, and pla:ed in a s= aller corrugated box and packed in with Page 1.

inspected and installed immediately, the containers shal
,'            be stored in a building so that*the containero are prote from inclement weather, in accordance with ANSI N45.2.2-However, before storage, all the containers shall be inspected for external damage that may have been caused during transit. Containers showing signs of external damage should be opened and the contents inspected imme!-
intely. Any visual damage or defect found to the conten shall be reported to Pacific Scientific within 24 hours, along with all the data shown on the containers.
It is reconsended that a fork lift or similar equipment be used when storing PSA-35 and -100 arrestors. When unpacking these arrestors for installation, it is recommended that some movable or traveling hoist device be used.
(3) UNPACK!NC On arrestors PSA-1/4, -1/2, -1, -3 and -10, simply slit open cartons and remove arrestors and accessories (if ar on arrestors PSA-35 and -100, make certain that the wooden skid is on a flat stable surface. Cut =etal banding around container, lift off lid and encircling sides. Cut metal banding around cradles and re=ove top cradles. When removing arrestors from skid after lid and top cradles have been removed, it is suggested that a sling be placed around the arrestor and the arrestor hoisted from the skid.

After renoval of arrestors from carton or, skid, inspeat painted or sine placed areas for damage. Inspect arrascors for any signs of obvious external danage.
I (4) RECEIVINC INS?ECTION d
After unpacking, arrestors of PSA-1/4 through -3 may be checked for freedom of movement by grasping the position indicator tube and slowly extending and retracting the position indicator tube. On larger models, considerable force vill be required to perfarn the extension and retraction of the position indicator tube and should not be considered necessary as a receiving L                                        inspection function unless evidence of danage is present.
Return to Pacific Scientific if malfunction is evident.

Section I shows a PSA-1/4 in the mid-position.              However .
it is imeortant to use local instructions, as the " cold" setting probably will not be the "mid-position".
The spherical bearings are designed to move 2 6' within the bearing socket. However, as good practice, eliminate as much mis-alisanent as possible and determine that not more than 2 6' be utilized at any position of the total stroke. If it is necessary to rotate the cylinder end plus, follow these instructions very carefully: (a) Remove attachments from the arrestor.      (b) Place the arrestor in a vertical position on a table,- sitting on the arrestor housing.              (c) While keeping a slight downward hand pressure on the top and to avoid any linear movement, use retaining ring pliers to free retaining ring.    (d) While maintaining slight downward hand pressure, slowly turn end plug by hand oniv to desired rotational position. Do not use wrench or other mechanical means.    (e) While maintaining hand pressure, replace retaisit ring. Expand and contract arrestor slowly through full stro; to determine that repositioning has not damaged interior components.

See    Figure 2, Section III for illustrations of "minimus" length arrestors.                    -
3.
MINIM"M LENGTW arrestors consist of an arrestor, and either one or two rear bracket assemblies. Two rear brackets are supplied if attach =ent at one end is to be made other than to a pipe clamp.
I
\
C.      VARIABLE LENCTH arrestors are supplied in seyerai modest (Refer to Figure 3, Section III and refer to the applicable
" Strut" drawing.)          In addition to the arrestor, a rear bracket assembly and an end cap asse=bly may be supplied. Either a weld adapter (male thread at one end) or a forward tube (male thread on and that 1-serts in arrestor and female threa* to accept threaded eat cap) vill be pre-asse= bled as rece1<ed.
With the combination of parts including the veld adapter it is necessary for the installer to supply a length of pipe cut to the appropriate " pin-to-pin" length requirements.
A " strut" drawing and a " mark" number on the nameplate may or may not be contractually required fro = Pacific Scientific.                                .,
The foregoing parts may also i=clude a length of pipe either pre-cut to length or over-length to be final cut at time of assembly and either velded into one or both mating fittings                                    g or not velded at all.
D.      INSTALLATION Before pro'ceeding read and observe the caution notes in General                              i Section, Paragraph C.              Consult drawing and mark nu=ber data.
Before velding the rear bracket (s) to structure it is recommended that the installation be "dumnied up" to determine that the planned fits and location agree with the actual condition.                                  ,,
When pipe is used allow for a minimum of 1/2" insertion into 6
nating parts.            However, do not insert to full depth.          Leave a minimum of 1/16" from " betta =ing out".                Tack welding may be utilized. Co= ply with lotal instructions as to the correct setting. Figure 1 Section III, shows a PSA-35 in the cid-position. N e v ri e r , it is !=_ ottant to use loeni instructions as !!. a  "-'.f" setti:3 prctati: vill not ha the "mid-position".

C. OPERATION No operating ins tructions are required f or Pacific Scientific Mechanical Shock Arrestors. Operation is purely automatic.
H. MAINTENANCE Pacific Scientific Shoek Arrestors'are of mechanical design, I              and, as such, are practically maintenance free.                      The shock arrestors are not presently designated in any equipment category requiring mandatory =aintenance service or inspection at specifi-cally designated time intervals. The type and frequency of I              maintenance actions are, therefore, at the discretion of the u ,.                owner.
I. INSPECTION I              The following information is provided as a guide to owners l                rather than specific recommendations. "When convenience, arrestors may be checked to determine that units are remaining functionally satisfactory.
I              On Models PSA-35 and PSA-100 detach one end of the arrestor from its retaining fittings. Use slings and hoists as necessary.
Extend and retract the arrestor through its full stroke range.
The mechanical friction (breakaway force) to extend and retract
'      I              the arrestar should not exceed 1% of its rated load. The nameplate carries rated load data.
If preferred, units may be returned to Pacific Scientific for l              a complete functional inspection - utilizing specialized equip-ment.
WARNINC If arrestors have been installed in I                              a containment area, they shall be decontaminated before ship =ent to Pacific Scientific. Observe local
        !                              regulations in this regard.                                .        .

J. SPARE PARTS                                                              .
Recommended spare parts are limited to the accessories used with the arrestor. These include transition tube assemblies, forward adapter assemblies, forward bracket asse=blies and rear                                          i bracket assemblies. These items are designated as " assemblies" because such components as spherical bearings, washers and cotter pins are included in the various combinations. The accessories may or may not be manufactured by Pacific Scientific. Therefore,                            f if, because of loss, damage or rej ected condition, it is necessary to order assemblies or parts of assemblies. it is
(
    !        important to supply as much in'f ormation to Pacific Scientific as possible. This information i=cludes model number, date of manufacture and serial nucher on the arrestor nameplate.                      Also,          {
nomenclature, part numbers and material code numbers of the components in question are of assistance. Contact with the                                  f original' purchaser of the equipment from Pacific Scientific                                L should provide further traceability and assurance that correct
('            replacement parts are being specified.
The quantity of " insurance" components to be considered for supporting original installations and to maintain as a hedge against later damage or loss is left to the discretion of the purchaser.                                          .

Therefore, f if, because of loss, damage or rej ected condition, it is necessary to order assemblies or parts of assemblies. it is

(

! important to supply as much in'f ormation to Pacific Scientific as possible. This information i=cludes model number, date of manufacture and serial nucher on the arrestor nameplate. Also, {

nomenclature, part numbers and material code numbers of the components in question are of assistance. Contact with the f original' purchaser of the equipment from Pacific Scientific L should provide further traceability and assurance that correct

(' replacement parts are being specified.

The quantity of " insurance" components to be considered for supporting original installations and to maintain as a hedge against later damage or loss is left to the discretion of the purchaser. .
