Dear Mr. Grier:

On January 18, 1980, the Nuclear Regulatory Comission IE Region I was in-formed by SNUPPS of deficiencies in vertical fire dampers furnished by Ruskin Manufacturing Company to Callaway and Wolf Creek job sites. These deficien-cies were reported by telecon to Mr. Wm. Bateman of Region I pursuant to re-quirements of 10CFR50.55(e). These deficiencies are considered to be generic in nature and are judged to be applicable to all SNUPPS units.

This report summarizes the safety implications associated with these items, pro-vides a brief chronology of events related thereto, and indicates follow up corrective actions taken and/or planned. All fire damper units, including those on site as well as those yet to ho delivered, will be modified as indi-cated in the enclosed report and oper

, ally cycled prior to or during in-stallation.

In view of the generic r of these deficiencies the vendor, Ruskin Manufacturing Company, has bee

,ised of the need for notifying other nuclear power plant facilities, as a: apriate, and the need for follow up modification. We understand that Russin has also independently notified the NRC of this matter.
