SUMMARY

OF PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING MEETINGS RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATIONS (TAC NOS. MD5905 AND MD5906)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted environmental scoping meetings related to the review of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2 (VEGP),

license renewal applications submitted by Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc (SNOC).

Two public meetings were conducted on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at the Augusta Technical College Waynesboro Campus, 216 Highway 24 South, Augusta, Georgia 30830.

Approximately 50 people attended the meetings. The attendees included representatives of the NRC staff, NRC contractors from EarthTech, members of the public, representatives from SNOC, news media, and local government officials. Public comments and questions addressed a wide range of issues including license renewal process, environmental justice, water use issues, and alternatives to license renewal.

A combined listing of attendees for both public meetings is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting handouts provided during the public meeting open house. The transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings are publicly available at the NRC Public Document Room (PDR), located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852, or from the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS).

The ADAMS Public Electronic Reading Room is accessible at http://adamswebsearch.nrc.gov/dologin.htm. The transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings are listed under Accession Nos. ML072840529 and ML072840530, respectively. A copy of the slides used during the NRC=s presentation is also available in ADAMS under

Accession No. ML072750261. Persons who do not have access to ADAMS, or who encounter problems in accessing the documents located in ADAMS, should contact the NRC's PDR reference staff by telephone at 1-800-397-4209, or 301-415-4737, or by e-mail at pdr@nrc.gov.
