Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Items of Interest Week Ending December 13, 2024 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) Staff Participated in the Joint Pressurized Water Reactor and Boiling Water Reactor Owners Group Risk Management Committee Meeting On December 11, 2024, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) staff participated in the joint Pressurized Water Reactor and Boiling Water Reactor Owners Group Risk Management Committee meeting. The staff delivered presentations on the following topics: an update on risk-informing Digital I&C, the Reactor Accident Analysis Modernization initiative, a status of the Risk-Informed Materials Assessment, an update on the Group for Risk Evaluation and Assessment Tools Review Status or GREATR, and recent international engagement with the Japanese regulator. Presentation slides are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) (ML24345A133). These meetings continue to provide for positive information exchange opportunities between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and industry on topics of mutual interest associated with risk and risk-informed decision making.
Staff Held a Public Meeting to Discuss the Agencys Ideas for Potential Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) Revisions to Implement Section 507 (Oversight and Inspection) of the ADVANCE Act On December 10, 2024, the staff held a public meeting to discuss the agencys ideas for potential Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) revisions to implement Section 507 (Oversight and Inspection) of the ADVANCE Act. Attendees included representatives from NEI, the industry, and members of the public. The next public meeting on ROP-related ADVANCE Act matters is tentatively scheduled for January 15, 2025.
Staff Received from Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) an Advanced Copy of the Proposed -A Version of the Advanced Logic System (ALS) Version 2 Digital Instrumentation and Control Platform Topical Report (TR) for Staff Confirmation and Verification On December 6, 2024, the staff received from Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) an advanced copy of the proposed -A version of the Advanced Logic System (ALS) Version 2 digital instrumentation and control platform topical report (TR) for staff confirmation and verification. The -A version of the TR incorporates the staffs final safety evaluation, which was issued September 30, 2024, (ML24236A211), and the final version of the TR. Following the staff review, WEC plans to officially submit the -A version of the TR. Upon verification of the -A version, a verification letter will be issued which would signify that the ALS Version 2 can be implemented across any reactor in the US fleet. WEC plans to utilize the ALS Version 2 in their eVinci microreactor, which is currently under preapplication engagement. Staff is raising this TR review to attention due to the following recent media coverage.
