Jan Strasma (630) 829-9663 Viktoria Mitlyng (630) 829-9662 MEETING TO DISCUSS RESULTS OF A SPECIAL INSPECTION AT D.C. COOK The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with representatives of American Electric Power Company on Wednesday, May 12, to discuss the results of a special inspection conducted to review performance at D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Station. The two-reactor facility is located near Bridgman, Michigan.
The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the Lincoln Charter Township Hall, 2055 W. John Beers Road, in Stevensville. The public is invited to observe the meeting, and NRC officials will be available before the conclusion of the meeting to answer questions from the public.
The special inspection results from a decline in two safety performance indicators related to four unplanned plant shutdowns over the past 15 months, with two involving the loss of the normal heat removal path. This led to the performance indicators going from green, or being of very low safety significance to white, which means low to moderate safety significance.
The special inspection reviewed the causes for the decline in performance and the plants corrective actions. The May 12 meeting will focus on the results of the review.
The report of the teams findings will be publicly available from the Region III Office of Public Affairs and on the NRCs web site: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html - use Docket Number 05000315 or 05000316. The report is expected to be issued in June. Assistance in using the web reading room is available by calling the NRC Public Document Room at 800-397-4209.
