Jan Strasma (630) 829-9663 Viktoria Mitlyng (630) 829-9662 NRC TO DISCUSS PERFORMANCE AT HONEYWELL The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with Honeywell Specialty Chemicals officials on Wednesday, April 23, to discuss the results of the agencys assessment of performance at the companys uranium processing facility, located in Metropolis, Illinois.
The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Massac County Courthouse, at 1 Superman Square, in Metropolis, Illinois. The public is invited to observe the meeting and will have an opportunity to make comments and ask questions of the NRC staff before the meeting is adjourned.
This performance review, which covers the period of February 1, 2001, through January 31 of this year, focused on four major arenas: safety operations, safeguards, radiological controls and facility support. The NRC staff concluded that the Honeywell facility staff performed well in the areas of safeguards, radiological controls and facility support, and identified no areas for improvement. In the arena of safety operations, the staff performance was evaluated as adequate but needing improvement in implementation of regulatory requirements.
The meeting will focus on the companys plans to address the NRCs concerns and the recent turnover in senior management positions at the facility.
The performance review is available from the NRCs Region III Office of Public Affairs, the NRC Public Document Room at 1-800-397-4209 and in the agencys ADAMS electronic
reading room at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html. To locate the document, enter the accession number ML030860438.
