NINE MILE POINT UNITS 1 AND 2 STRIKE As of July 11, 2011, members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 97 Union had not accepted a new contract with Nine Mile Point (NMP) Units 1 and 2. At 12:01 a.m.
on July 9, the Union members commenced a strike at NMP. The Union includes plant staff from the operations, maintenance, radiation protection, and chemistry organizations.
The NRC has completed an inspection of NMPs strike contingency plans per established inspection procedures (Inspection Procedure 92709, "Licensee Strike Contingency Plans").
The purpose of the inspection was to evaluate the adequacy of NMPs strike contingency plan to assure that public health and safety, and security will be maintained during any strike period.
This inspection verified that the licensee had properly trained operators and other personnel who will be performing replacement functions during the strike.
On July 8, 2011, at 10:00 p.m., the NRC resident inspectors, supplemented by regional inspectors, implemented 24 hour2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> coverage at the site (Inspection Procedure 92711, Continued Implementation of Strike Plans during an Extended Strike). The Branch Chief responsible for NMP is also on site for the initial days of the strike to manage resident and regional inspection resources and to observe the licensee's contingency plan implementation to ensure NMP meets its regulatory requirements.
The information presented herein has been discussed with NMP Regulatory Affairs and is current as of July 11, 2011, at 8:00 a.m.
The NRC has notified Federal and State agencies.
