Organization:The Samuel Lawrence Foundation General Comment Diablo Canyon nuclear reactor is a disaster waiting to happen. The electricity generated by the embrittled, aged Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant spends money for uneconomic repairs, etc. instead of investment and deployment of clean renewables. With continual operation we we have no million year storage solution for the deadly million year nuclear waste produced during the operating lifetime of the plant. Currently waste sits in thin metal cans with 25 years warranty, in a marine environment on a seismic beach. Governor Newsom's extending the lifespan of Diablo puts surrounding the community and ecosystem at risk because Diablo sits near multiple active fault lines, years behind on maintenance postponed in light of its 2025 decommissioning.
