No: 25-016 April 7, 2025 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 ACRS to hold Subcommittee Meeting April 17 in New Hampshire to Discuss Seabrook Concrete Issue The Plant Operations Subcommittee of the Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards will hold a meeting with agency staff to discuss the Seabrook nuclear power plants management of concrete degradation. The committee will visit the facility prior to the meeting.
The hybrid meeting will be April 17 from 2-4 p.m. Eastern at the Best Western Plus - The Inn at Hampton, 815 Lafayette Road in Hampton, New Hampshire, and via Microsoft Teams.
Subcommittee members will discuss their visit to the plant and the NRCs oversight of the concrete degradation issue, which is unique to Seabrook among U.S. nuclear power plants. The public will have an opportunity to comment during the meeting.
The NRC has no safety concerns with Seabrooks ability to operate the plant safely. The committee, and this public meeting, is focused on understanding how concrete degradation develops and how affected structures can be safely managed, including through the NRC staffs inspections. The plant visit and field meeting will examine NextEras commitment to an aging management program focused on ensuring concrete structures continue to meet their safety requirements.
The ACRS is a group of experienced technical experts, independent of the NRC staff, that reports directly to and advises the Commission on safety issues related to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants, along with issues of health physics and radiation protection.
Additional information including written reports can be found on the ACRS website. A full listing of the meetings for 2025 is also posted on the NRC website.
