No: 25-019 April 17, 2025 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 UPDATED - NRC Seeks Input; Offers Hearing Opportunity on Point Beach Subsequent License Renewal Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement UPDATE - Dates in the news release have been updated.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on its revised draft supplemental environmental impact statement - called a SEIS - for an application for Point Beach, Units 1 and 2 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. If approved, the subsequent license renewal would allow the Point Beach nuclear power station to operate for an additional 20 years. Unit 1s license currently expires Oct. 5, 2030; Unit 2s license currently expires March 8, 2033. The NRC has also opened an opportunity to request an adjudicatory hearing on the revised draft SEIS.
The revised draft SEIS evaluates new information obtained since the issuance of the original draft SEIS in November 2021, including the agencys updated license renewal generic EIS, as well as additional information the agency received from NextEra Point Beach, the plants owner. The NRC staffs preliminary conclusion in the revised draft SEIS is there are no adverse environmental impacts that would preclude renewing the licenses for Point Beach, Units 1 and 2.
The revised draft SEIS is open for comments until June 2, 2025. Interested parties have until June 16, 2025, to request an adjudicatory hearing.
The NRC staff will host an informational webinar on the revised draft SEIS on May 15, 2025, at 3 p.m. Central time. Details on how to join the webinar will be posted on the NRCs public meeting schedule. The staff will discuss the environmental review process and accept comments on the revised draft SEIS.
Written comments can also be submitted by email to PointBeach-SLRSEIS@nrc.gov or electronically at regulations.gov using Docket ID NRC-2020-0277. Additionally, comments can be submitted by U.S. mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop: TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, ATTN: Program Management, Announcements and Editing Staff.
The Point Beach revised draft SEIS will be available at the Lester Public Library, 1001 Adams St., Two Rivers, Wisconsin. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.
