No: 25-021 April 16, 2025 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Seeks Public Comment on Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Clinton License Renewal The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on the draft supplemental environmental impact statement for renewing the operating license of the Clinton reactor in Clinton, Illinois. The draft report contains the NRC staffs evaluation and preliminary conclusion that no environmental impacts would preclude renewing the license for an additional 20 years of operation.
The NRC staff will hold a virtual public meeting on the draft report on May 6 from 3-5 p.m. Eastern time. The staff will describe the environmental review process and accept comments from the public on the draft report.
Members of the public can also submit comments online at regulations.gov, under Docket ID NRC-2024-0046; via email to ClintonEnvironmental.Resource@nrc.gov; or by U.S. mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001. The deadline for submitting comments is June 2.
Clinton Power Station Unit 1 is a boiling-water reactor about 20 miles north of Decatur, Illinois, and its operating license expires April 17, 2027. The plant owner, Constellation Energy Generation, submitted the license renewal application on Feb. 14, 2024. The NRCs review of the application covers both safety and environmental issues. The draft report is part of the NRCs environmental review and is available on the NRCs website. The final environmental report is anticipated to be issued in Fall 2025.
The Clinton license renewal application is available on the NRC website and can be viewed at the Vespasian Warner Public Library, 310 N Quincy St. in Clinton. General information about reactor license renewal is available on the NRC website.
