ALL STATES ALL FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBES NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC MEETING ON THE ADVANCE ACT CONGRESSIONAL REPORT ON ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWS FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR APPLICATIONS STC-24-054

Purpose:

To provide notification to States and all Federally recognized Indian Tribes about the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs) upcoming public meeting on the NRCs efforts to submit a report to Congress on efforts to facilitate efficient, timely, and predictable environmental reviews for nuclear reactor applications. The meeting will be held virtually on September 25, 2024, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET. Further details about the meeting can be found in the NRC Meeting Notice accessible from the NRCs Agency-wide Documents Access and Management System (https://adams.nrc.gov/wba/) under Accession No. ML24247A101.

Background:

The NRC has been tasked with submitting to Congress a report on the efforts of the NRC to facilitate efficient, timely, and predictable environmental reviews of nuclear reactor applications for a license under section 103 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 (42 U.S.C. 2133),

including through expanded use of categorical exclusions, environmental assessments, and generic environmental impact statements. The scope of report will include modernization of environmental reviews for all types of nuclear reactor application reviews (e.g., new reactors, renewals, power uprates, etc.) but will not include other licensing actions unrelated to AEA Section 103 nuclear reactor applications. The report is due to Congress on January 5, 2025.

Discussion: The NRC is holding the September 25, 2024, public meeting to seek input from external stakeholders as it prepares a report to Congress on efforts to facilitate efficient, timely, and predictable environmental reviews for nuclear reactor applications. At the meeting, NRC staff will provide a discussion on the ADVANCE Act and the NRCs efforts. After the NRC staffs presentation, attendees will be afforded the opportunity to provide comments or ask questions of the staff.
