No: 24-014 February 23, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRCs Cayetano Santos Honored as a 2024 Federal Engineer of the Year Cayetano Tanny Santos, a senior project manager at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has been honored by the National Society of Professional Engineers as one of the top 26 engineers in the federal government. Santos received the honor today during the NSPEs 45th annual ceremony.
Santos, who has worked at the agency for 28 years, was most recently a key member of an NRC team providing oversight of construction and startup operation of the new Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in Georgia.
Tanny led all licensing activities for the first two commercial nuclear power plants to be built and operated in the United States in over 30 years, said Andrea Veil, director of NRCs Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. His experience and expertise enabled the successful first use of the one-step licensing process, one of the NRCs top strategic priorities and a project of national importance.
The NSPE, which serves more than 26,000 licensed professional engineers of all disciplines, promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering. Federal agencies employing at least 50 engineers may nominate candidates for the Federal Engineer of the Year award. Top candidates are honored each year, and the society names a single winner at the ceremony.
Santos earned a bachelors degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Florida and a masters degree in materials science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
