No: 23-080 December 19, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Announces Opportunity to Request a Hearing for Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced in the Federal Register an opportunity to request a hearing on an application to renew the operating licenses for Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in Avila Beach, California. The notice includes instructions for filing hearing requests.
Pacific Gas & Electric filed the application on Nov. 7, seeking to extend the plants operating licenses by an additional 20 years. Diablo Canyon, located about 12 miles southwest of San Luis Obispo, is currently licensed to operate through Nov. 2, 2024, for Unit 1 and through Aug. 26, 2025, for Unit 2.
The NRC staff has determined the application contains sufficient information to formally docket the application and begin its detailed safety and environmental reviews. With the docketing of the application, the reactors licenses will remain in effect under an exemption to agency regulations until the agencys review is complete.
The deadline for filing hearing requests is March 4, 2024.
Information about the license renewal process is available on the NRC website. A copy of the Diablo Canyon license renewal application is online and publicly available at the San Luis Obispo Library at 995 Palm Street in San Luis Obispo.
