No: 23-057 September 6, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Makes Available Summers Subsequent License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received a subsequent license renewal application from Dominion Energy South Carolina, Inc., which requests an additional 20 years of operation for the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station. The application to renew the plant license from 60 to 80 years is now available for public inspection on the NRC website.
Dominion filed an application August 18 seeking to renew the plants license for a second time. Summer is a pressurized-water reactor in Jenkinsville, South Carolina, approximately 26 miles northwest of Columbia. The NRC approved in April 2004 the first renewal to extend the licensing term from 40 to 60 years. The reactor currently is licensed to operate through Aug. 6, 2042.
The NRC staff is reviewing the application to determine if it has sufficient information to begin detailed safety and environmental reviews. Once the determination is made, the staff will then docket it and publish a notice of opportunity to request an adjudicatory hearing before the NRCs Atomic Safety and Licensing Board.
