No: 23-042 July 20, 2023 CONTACT: Ivonne Couret, 301-415-8200 NRC Appoints Robert P. Martin and Thomas E. Roberts to Four-Year ACRS Terms The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has appointed Robert P. Martin and Thomas E.
Roberts to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards for four-year terms.
The ACRS, a group of highly experienced technical experts, advises the Commission independently from the NRC staff on safety issues related to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants, nuclear materials and waste management, and radiation protection.
In addition to his ACRS membership responsibilities, Martin is a professional engineer and nuclear industry consultant with over 30 years of experience. He previously worked at BWX Technologies, Inc., Framatome, Siemens Power Corp., and Idaho National Laboratory. His specialty area is in the development of evaluation methodologies and models for the design and safety analysis of advanced nuclear power plant concepts. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 journal publications, articles, and conference papers, including two books, A Best-Estimate Reactor Core Monitor Using State Feedback Strategies to Resolve Uncertainties and Design-Basis Accident Analysis Methods for Light-Water Nuclear Power Plants. Martin holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering from Penn State University and earned his bachelors and masters degrees in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.
Roberts brings more than 40 years of experience in the field of nuclear reactor systems and safety. Prior to joining ACRS, he spent 36 years as an engineer and engineering manager at the Naval Nuclear Propulsion (Naval Reactors) Program, headquartered in Washington, D.C. He worked in various roles providing overall technical direction in the development of digital instrumentation and control systems for nuclear-powered ships. For his last 12 years with the Navy, he served as the director of reactor plant safety and analysis at the Naval Sea Systems Command. Following his naval career, he has worked as a consultant. Roberts holds bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia.
