No: 23-039 July 11, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Seeks Comment on Proposed Update to Guidance for Subsequent Reactor License Renewal The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking comments on three draft documents that would update guidance for U.S. nuclear power plant owners requesting the renewal of operating reactor licenses for a second time.
The first document updates lessons learned on how a reactors safety systems can safely manage the effects of aging beyond 60 years of operation. The second document provides the NRC staffs latest plan for reviewing applications to extend operating licenses from 60 to 80 years. The last document provides the information and analysis supporting the changes in the first two documents. The revisions are based on the experience and lessons learned during license renewal reviews since the documents were originally published in 2017.
The NRC will hold public meetings to gather comments later this month. Meeting details will be posted in the near future. In addition to providing oral comments, written comments can be submitted via regulations.gov under Docket ID NRC-2023-0096. They also can mailed to the Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001. The deadline for submitting comments is September 11.
