No: 23-022 March 13, 2023 CONTACT: David McIntyre, 301-415-8200 NRC Proposes FY 2024 Budget to Congress The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing to Congress a budget of $156 million in net appropriations for fiscal year 2024. The budget request proposes $1.006 billion in gross budget authority, an increase of $63.2 million over the agencys enacted budget for FY 2023.
The budget request also proposes the use of $27.1 million in carryover funds to offset the nuclear reactor safety budget, resulting in an adjusted gross budget authority of $979.2 million. The NRC expects to recover $823.2 million of its budget in license fees.
Details of the budget request include:
- Funding of $530.8 million for nuclear reactor safety, including $425.8 million for operating reactors and $105 million for new reactors.
- Funding of $152.9 million for nuclear materials and waste safety.
- Funding of $34.2 million for the continued development of a regulatory infrastructure and staff capabilities for licensing of advanced nuclear reactor and fuel cycle technologies.
- Funding of $23.8 million for international activities.
- Funding of $2 million for minority serving institution grants.
- Funding of $18.6 million for the Office of Inspector General, including funding to provide inspector general services for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
- Support for 2,948.9 full-time equivalent employees, including the OIG, an increase of 89.3 FTE from the agencys FY 2023 enacted budget.
