Department of Energy Washington, DC 20585 August 24, 2022 Mr. Darry 1 H. Parsons Information Security Branch Chief U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Mail Stop: O2-D 15M

Dear Mr. Parsons:

In reply, refer to AU62-22-Nl-0044.

This letter is in response to a classification determination request received from your office. The request is to determine the classification of the Prototype Laser System 1 (PLS-1) as defined in the July 15, 2022, document from SILEX Systems Limited to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission addressing additional questions about PLS-1. PLS-1 is to be shipped from Lucas Heights, Australia to Wilmington, North Carolina.

After reviewing the information provided by Global Laser Enrichment on August 16, 2022, and consulting with two laser experts, the Office of Classification agrees that the PLS-1 operating envelope does not reveal any classified information. However, if the operating envelope changes for future equipment, that equipment will have to evaluated for a new classification determination.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at (301) 903-1185 or Troy O'Baker ofmy staff at (301) 903-1329.
