[External_Sender] deny license for WCS/ISP As a resident of Grant County NM, I am writing to ask you to deny the license for Waste Control Specialist/Interim Storage Partners proposal for high-level nuclear waste storage facility outside of Eunice NM just a few miles away from the proposed Holtec facility.
The transportation of 40,000 metric tons of spent fuel by train for 20 years across the nation, going through nearby Lordsburg, Deming and El Paso poses a risk of accident, leaks and sabotage. New Mexico already has numerous nuclear facilities for low-level radioactive waste and we dont need any more. A single rail car of high level waste would roughly carry as much plutonium as contained in the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. DOE calculated that train transport would have an accident rate of 1 in 10,000 shipments. Moving the wastes creates unnecessary risks and imposes the majority of impacts to low income communities of colorlargely Hispanicviolating environmental justice principles. All of us who travel, live and work near transport corridors are being put at risk with no input. Requests for public meeting along routes have been rejected added to the problems created by this COVID crisis. Having this deadline on election day is unconscionable.
Centralized consolidated Waste Storage is not needed. The least risky option is to store fuel in dry casks at the generation site or a nearby guarded site. Most reactor sites are licensed to store waste for 60 years past decommissioning. If the NRC licenses this and Holtec, there will be no reason for facilities around the nation to consider other solutions.
There was a ruptured cask of radioactive material at the Carlsbad WIPP site on February 14, 2014 that cost 240 million and took 2 years to address. Yucca mountain repository in Nevada has failed and no permanent repository is available yet.
The NRC should prevent terrorism, accidental risks and promote environmental justice by denying this license.
Sincerely, Marilyn Gendron 5 Warm Creek Road San Lorenzo, NM 88041
