SUBJECT:

NRC EVALUATION OF UNION ELECTRIC COMPANY RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 97-05.FOR CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. MA0451)

Dear Mr. Randolph:

NRC Generic Letter (GL) 97-05, " Steam Generator Tube Inspection Techniques,' was issued to verify that licensee steam generator tube inspection practices were consistent with existing regulatory requirements and plant licensing bases. By letter dated March 17,1998 Union Electric Company submitted its response to GL 97-05, providing a description and technical basis for all inspection techniques used to size the' depth of steam generater tube degradation at the Callaway Plant. The NRC has reviewed the information provided in the response and did not identify any concerns with the steam generator tube inspection techniques employed at Callaway Plant that would indicate Union Electric Company is not in compliance with the current 4

licensing basis for the Callaway Plant. ~ As such, the staff's review of this issue is complete.
