SUBJECT:
NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-353/97-09
Dear Mr. Smith:
This letter refers to the inspection conducted on October 10,1997, through January 16,
1998, at your Limerick Unit 2 reactor facility. The inspectors responded to the fire in the
D21 Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) to evaluate your response to the event, root cause
analysis, repair activities, and retest. The inspectors reviewed the extensive root cause
determination completed by PECO on October 24,1997. The inspectors interviewed PECO .
staff, attended meetings at Limerick Generating Station and Valley Forge Labs, reviewed
maintenance practices, and applicable documents. The enclosed report presents the results
of this inspection.
Based on the results of this inspection, the NRC has determined that an apparent corrective
action violation occurred. In inspection report 98-02, other corrective action issues will be
identified. We will notify you of our proposed action for this apparent violation at a later
date.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter,
its enclosures,~and your response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
