Dear Mr. Carey:

Subject:

Use of ASME Code Case N-318-2 For Reaver Valley Unit 2 By letter dated April 29, 1986, you reouested NRC approval to use ASME III Code Case N-318-2, " Procedures for Evaluation of Design of Rectangular Cross Section Attachments on Class 2 or 3 Piping,Section III, Division I."

However, Revision 2 of this Code Case has been superseded by Revision 3 and therefore Pevision 2 has been annulled by ASME.

We expect that Revision 3 of the subject Code Case will be incorporated into a future revision of Regulatory Guide 1.84, with the caveat that utilities wishing to use the Code Case be required to provide information on the method of lug attachment intended to be used, and the piping systems and their locations to which the Code Case will be applied.

Your request to use Code Case N-318-?, modified to a request for Code Case N-318-3 1s thus approved with the condition stated above.

In addition, we acknowledge your comitment to accordingly update the Beaver Valley Unit 2 FSAR.

If you have any ouestions, please contact your project manager, Mr. Peter Tam.

Sincerely, f6 Daniel G. Mcdonald, Acting Director PWR Proiect Directorate #2 Division of PWR Licensing-A Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc: See next page y
