Inspection Number 99990001/85-54 This refers to the special safety inspection conducted by Marlene J. Taylor and
' Van Scovill of this office on November 5,1985 of activities authorized by the NRC General License contained in 10 CFR 40.22 and to the discussions of our findings held by Mrs. Taylor with yourself at the conclusion of the inspection.
The inspection was an examination of activities conducted.under your license as they relate to radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and the conditions of your license. The inspection consisted of interviews with personnel, measurements made by the inspectors, and observa-tions by the ins;.ectors.
Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.
In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter will be placed in the Public Document Room.

Description of Activities Kurtz Brothers, Inc. is authorized by the general license contained in 10 CFR 40.22 to use and transfer not more than fifteen pounds of source material at any one time and not more than a total of 150 pounds of source material in any one calendar year.
The licensee uses thoriated nickel to manufacture various pieces of equipment.
No violations were identified.
3.
Organization The General Manager also acts as the Radiation Safety Officer at this facility. As the Radiation Safety Officer he is responsible for the-training given to the employees with regard to radiation and radiation safety.
Kurtz Brothers, Inc. employs approximately 60 individuals.
Shipping and receiving records show that the licensee received their first shipment of thoriated nickel (2% thorium) from Nickel Alloy, Oceanside, New York in April, 1985.
To date they have received three shipments of material, one in April,1985, one in May,1985, and one in July,1985, for a total weight of 3.84 pounds of thorium.
No violations were identified.
4.
Training The General Manager stated that all employees attend a radiation safety
-training course that he teaches.
He stated that course incorporates basic radiation physics along with safe handling procedures. Such practices as wearing gloves, face masks, disposable smocks, and no eating or drinking in the work area are covered. The General Manager also stated that safe handling procedures are posted in all areas in which the thoriated nickel is used.
2 During a tour of the facility the inspectors saw that the safe handling procedures were posted in all the-areas in which the thoriated nickel was used, and that waste receptacles for the scrap thoriated nickel were separated from the other waste containers and marked with a radioactive materials sticker.
Separate receptacles, which are marked with a radio-active material sticker, for the protective clothing worn by individuals working with the thoriated nickel were also available.
The inspectors also interviewed several employees that worked with the thoriated nickel. The employees all stated that.they were told that the material was radioactive and that they received training on what the material was and how to handle it properly. The inspectors also saw that the workers wore face masks, smocks, and gloves when machining thoriated nickel pieces.
No violations were identified.
5.
Radiological Surveys The inspectors made radiological surveys of various areas in which the thoriated nickel is used with a Ludlum Model 14C with a Geiger Mueller end probe calibrated on September 10, 1985. Radiation levels were within acceptable limits.
No violations were identified.
6.
Exit Interview The inspector met with the individual denoted in paragraph 1.
They summarized the scope of the inspection and noted that no violations were identified.
