iSUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50 482/97-20 AND NOTICE OF VIOLATION
Dear Mr. Maynard:

An NRC inspection was conducted October 20-24, 1997, at your Wolf Creek Generating
- LStation reactor facility. The enclosed report presents the scope and results of that
Lint,pection.
'
Three violations of NRC requirements were identified The violations involved the failure to
post and control a locked high radiation area, a f ailure to track and label items containing
radioactive material, and a failure to post a contaminated area conspicuously. These
violations are of concern, because they indicate a negative trend in the performance of the
'
' radiation protection prograni. In addition, it was noted during the inspection that prejob
briefings needo'd improvement.

These violations are cited in the enclosed Notice of Violation (Notice), and the
circumstances surrounding the violations are described in detail in the enclosed report,.
Please note that you are required to respond to this letter and shoutclollow the instructions
specified in the enclosed Noti.:e when preparing your response. The NRC wil' use your
response, in part, to sietermine whether further enforcement action is necessary to ensure
compliance with regulatory requirements.
