INDIANA & MICHIGAN ELECTRIC COMPANY P.O. BOX 16631 COLUMBUS, OHIO 43216 June 17, 1986 AEP:NRC:0775AF Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-315 License No. DPR-58 ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF LIMITORQUE VALVES Mr. Uldis Potapovs Vendor Program Branch Office of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555

Dear Mr. Potapovs:

The purpose of this letter is to update our letter AEP:NRC:0775AE (dated May 29, 1986) from M. P. Alexich to H. R. Denton. We are submitting this letter to you at the suggestion of our NRC project manager, who was informed of our findings by telephone on June 6, 1986.

Since that letter was submitted, we have continued our inspection of Limitorque valves installed in D. C. Cook Unit 1.

Thus far, our inspection has found the following valves, three located inside containment and one located outside containment, which have undocumented wires:

IM0-315, IMO-316, IMO-54, and IMO-910.

IMO-315 and 316 are the ECCS motor operated valves which are used to go from cold leg to hot leg recirculation on Train A.

IMO-54 is!the motor operated valve on the charging flow line from the Boron Injecti6h Tank to Loop 4.

IMO-910 is in the line from the Refueling Water Storage Tank to the centrifugal charging pumps. We cannot comment on the safety si.nificance 3

of these undocumented wires at this time since we are still periarming our engineering review.

The undocumented wire in the above valves was replaced with wire which has been qualified in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49.

Our inspection of the Limitorque valves is continuing, and each valve will be inspected prior to the reactor entering a mode in which the specific valve is required.
