EVENT OR UNUSUAL CCCURRENCE--PNO-77-97 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation land is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:
REACTOR TRIP FROM LOSS OF A REACTOR COOLANT PUMP; REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM LEAK TO CONTAINMENT At 10:53 a.m., June 4, the reactor tripped from 100 percent power on low flow due to loss of a Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP). All systems functioned properly after the trip.
The unit has been placed in the Cold Shutdown Mode.
The power cable to one RCP faulted and arced to the RCP's seal water return line. The arc burned a hole through this line resulting in a leak of about 2 gpm inside containment.
No personnel overexposures or rele'ases to the environment occurred.

During cleanup operations on the morning of June 5, three employees, working inside containment, became nauseous from an odor they described as " sweet smelling".
The employees were taken to a hospital, checked and returned to the facility.
The cause of the nausea could i
not be determined.

It is expected that the Unit will remain shutdown for four or five days to determine the cause of the problem and complete repairs, d)
The licensee notified Lower Alloways Creek Officials of these events.

Media interest is expected because of close attention given to conditions at Salem Nuclear Power Station. A press release was made by the licensee ori June 5.

NRC Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Chief Engineer at 8:45 p.m., June 4.
The status was discussed with the Station Superintendent at 11:55 a.m., June 5.
