Dear Sir:
The U. S. Department of Agriculture herein requests a Certificate of Compliance be is su ed to cover the trans-porting of the U. S. Army Natic k Laboratory Research Irradiator package as stown in the enclosures. A certificate is sought for transporting large quan-tities of Group III materials (250,000 C1 of Cs-137), special form, by motor transport, exclu sive use vehicle. The package assembled for shipm ent weighs ap proxima t ely 20,000 lbs. with a maximum radioactive thermal decay heat for the cont ent s of 1,000 wa t t s. The cask is of welded steel construction with eight (3) inc hes minimum lead thickness for shielding. All velds are full pene-tration. A double-weld ed OE-7 00 type protective jacket is providad f or shipping. The void space between the inner surf ace of the overpack and the irradiator will be blocked with plywood as described in DOT's special permit Number 5362 issued for the package.
