f WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 g, Ns November 22, 1995 MEMORANDUM T0:
Carl H. Berlinger, Chief Containment Systems and Severe Accident Branch Division of Systems Safety and Analysis Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM:
Charles E. Ader, Chief h
Accident Evaluation Branch c~
Division of Systems Technology Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
SUBJECT:
STATUS OF THE PASSIVE AUT0 CATALYTIC RECOMBINER TEST PROGRAM In the memorandum dated September 22, 1995, from D. L. Morrison to W. T.
Russell, we said that AEB would keep NRR informed on the progress of the passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) performance testing that RES is supporting at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in response to an NRR user need. On November 2,1995, a key conference call took place between AEB, SCSB, and SNL to decide on the size of PAR that should be purchased for the tests.
The conference call was a part of a series of communications between RES, NRR, and SNL investigating the available options for PAR performance testing.
In the conference call, all the participants unanimously agreed that the optimum size PAR for these tests is a 1/2 scale PAR with the chimney skewed at one side only.
Immediately after the November 2, 1995, conference call, SNL prepared a purchase order for the 1/2 scale PAR.
As SNL indicates in the attached letter, it is estimated that the PAR will be available to SNL no later than the end o January 1996.
SNL will start testing in mid February 1996 at the earliest, and the tests are expected to be completed by mid-March 1996, assuming the testing starts in mid February.
" Quick look" letter reports will be issued two weeks after the completion of the tests.
RES will continue to keep the NRR staff informed on the progress of this program.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or Dr. Asimios Halliakos of my staff if you have any questions.
