Rt. 8, Box 228E, Morgantown. WV 26505 304-292 9729 Robert F. Stewart Nuclear Chemist May 23, 1985 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region II Material Radiation Protection Section 101 Marietta Street, Suite 2900 Atlanta, CA 30323 ATTENTI0 : Paul R. Guinn
Dear Paul:
The 543 Company urgently needs authorization to service a 300 mCiAm 241 source for use in a Berthold Ash Analyzer.
Currently license SNM 1872 only authorizes 50 mci sources.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky can authorize South East Coal Co. to install a Berthold Ash Analyzer and to be serviced by the 543 Co. or any persons speci-fically authorized by Kentucky, NRC or an Agreement State.
They cannot autho-rize the 543 Company to service the Berthold because the company laboratory is outside of Kentucky's jurisdiction. Thus, the 543 Company could not remove and hold the source for meter relocation, nor remove from service in the event of damage or accident.
I certainly would not want to leak test a source if there were nothing I could do to correct an unsafe condition.
Thus I request amendment of license SNM 1872 to include service of a 300 mCiAm 241 source in a Berthold Ash Analyz'cr.
If you agree, but need a formal application, perhaps the enc.losed amended application would be adequate.
It contains no proprietary information.
This topic is now urgent since I need to leak test next month.
Because of the urgency, may I phone you May 30 for your opinion?
Sincerely,
. Mh o ort F. Stewart
