Murley, Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region I 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293 Response to IE Bulletin 83-05: ASME Nuclear Code Pumps and Spare Parts Manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Company

Dear Sir:

The subject bulletin transmitted information concerning ASME Nuclear Code pumps manufactured by Hayward Tyler Pump Company (HTPC) and spare parts provided by HTPC in ASME Code pumps manufactured by HTPC or other companies.

Specifically the bulletin outlined actions to be taken oy licensees if certain HTPC pumps or spare parts were in use, or planned to be in use, in systems important to safety.

With regards to Pilgrim Station Unit No.1, there are no ASME Code pumps manu-factured by HTPC in use in systems important to safety. There are also no spare parts manufactured by HTPC in Code pumps important to safety.

An exhaustive search of our records data base has resulted in negative findings for the exis-tence of HTPC components.

At this time we do not have any plans to use HTPC pumps or spare parts in safety ralated systems at Pilgrim Station. To address future plans which would require the use of HTPC pumps or spare parts, HTPC will be added to our Approved Supplier List with the limitation that all future procurement of HTPC pumps or spare parts be evaluated in accordance with IE Bulletin 83-05.

The Approved Supplier List is a listing of suppliers who have been approved by Boston Edison Company Quality Assurance to supply safety related materials, equipment, and services for use at, or in support of, Pilgrim Station Unit No.1.

With regards to our cancelled Pilgrim Unit 2 Project, the requirements of this bulletin do not apply since we never possessed a construction permit.

However, we did procure four HTPC pumps for use in Pilgrim 2 and these pumps are listed in Attachment I to the bulletin.

At present we are marketing these pumps for nuclear and non-nuclear service.

Therefore, we are taking the following actions
