Dear Mr. Keppler:

POTENTIAL 10CFR50.55(e) RL' PORT NO. U-35 POLAR CRANE SNUBBER ASSEMBLY DAMAGE CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On August 19, 1981 we informed NRC Region III of a potentially reportable deficiency regarding the polar crane snubber assembly pin which was found to be worn to the point where it could not be expected to function as designed.

Our Architect / Engineer has now completed their evaluation of the matter and has concluded that the entire polar crane system is of sufficient strength to resist and transfer to the containment shell the impact loads that would be generated if the polar crane derailed during a seismic event as a result of the failure of the snubber earthquake restraint assemblies.

Mr. Konklin requested that we submit a written withdrawal of this potential 10CFR50.55(e).

This letter is being sent in response to his request.

Very truly yours, Donald F.
