Mr. Robert E. Denton.

Vice President - Nuclear Energy

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant

1650 Calvert Cliffs Parkway

Lusby, Maryland 20657 - 4702

,

Dear Mr. Denton:

Subject:

NRC Region I Resident Inspection Report Nos. 50-317/93-13 and

50-318/93-13 (April 25,1993 - May 29,1993)

This report transmits the findings of the safety inspection conducted by the resident

inspectors at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. At the conclusion of the inspection,

these findings were discussed with Mr. Cruse of your staff.

Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report

I

which is enclosed with this letter and were selected in order to ensure that your facility is

operated with due regard for the public health and safety. Within these areas, the inspection

'

consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with

personnel, and observations by the inspectors. Overall, the NRC has concluded that your

facility was operated in a safe manner.

BG&E's efforts to remove some highly radioactive residue from under the Unit 2 refueling

pool upender assembly were excellent. This was evident from the thorough job planning, the

'

use of mock ups, the extensive radiation monitoring and the close supervision of thejob.

BG&E demonstrated a strong commitment identifying and correcting adverse conditions in

the plant during this evolution.
