Thank you for your letters of June 18, 1982, and August 24, 1982, in response to our letters dated May 19, 1982, and August 2, 1982.
We have reviewed the clarification of the Burns and Roe position regarding design checking / verification,thesubjectofNonconformanceC.2.
Based on your response and our further discussions with NRC Region V personnel, the requirement for independent verification of design was not im)osed on the WPPSSUnit2projectnorhassuchacommitmentbeenmadebytielicensee.
However, we find that a nonconformance does exist.
While independent design verification does not appear to be required, your checking of calculations does not conform with your controlling procedures.
Section B.8 of WNP-2-ED-010, states the "Grou SguadLeader...assignsanotherengineer.pSupervisor/Designeeor to check the calcula-tions (emphasis added).
Ihe Group Su ervisor assi ned himself, not "another engineer," to check the calcu ation identi ied in the nonconform-ance.
Other sections of WNP-2-ED-010 lead one to the same conclusion.
Therefore, please respond to this item as previously requested.
Please provide this additional information within 25 days from the date of this letter in order that we may complete our review in a timely manner.
