Dear Sir:

As requested in Ref.(a), please be advised that Boston Edison Company intends to modify the Scram Discharge System at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station to meet the long-tem design and safety criteria as presented in your December 1,1980 Generic Safety Evaluation Rep' ort accompanying Ref.(c).

Design modifications presently being evaluated for compliance with this criteria are:

I1 stalling redundant instrument volumes with improved hydraulic coupling from the scram discharge header, e.nd improving the reliability of the level instrumen-tation in the instrument volumes to sustain fluid transients (hydrodynamic loads) or B.

Providing a single instrument volume with improved hydraulic coupling-from the scram discharge header and improving the reliability of the level instru-mentation in the instrument volume.

Eisenhut February 14, 1981 Page Two The engineering evaluation and decision the final design will be completed by June 15, 1981, which is in such t.ose proximity to our next refueling outage (September, 1981), that the earliest real date for im-plementation is during our 1983 refueling outage, tentatively scheduled for June 1983.

The NRC position on Diverse Instrumentation remains as an item under review and is not included as part of our commitment at this time.
