4 September 26, 1980 515 West Point Avenue University City, Missouri 63130 Mr. Leland C. Rouse, Chief Advanced Fuel and Spent Fuel Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Rouse:
It is my understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission does not approve of the use of evaporation ponds except"in regions where the evapora-tion rate is significantly greater than the rainfall," as per Regulatory Guide 3.13 Would you please tell me if there are similar climate restrictions on the use of spray ponds?
In addition, would you please tell me the following about the spray ponds at the General Electric spent fuel storage facility in Morris, Illinois:
1.
What kind of itner is in the spray ponds?
2.
How often is the water drained to check for leakage, and to make the requisite repairs? Are temporary storage tanks used at such times?
3.
Does the makeup water to replace that which evaporates come from the 1111nois River or the Kankakee? What is the intake rate in gallons per minute?
4.
Is there an outfall or discharge pipe for the G.E spent fuel facility, and if so, at what river mile on the Illinois or Kankakee is it located?
Wh> t is the expiration date of the relevant NPDES permit?
- k..st is the discharge rate in gallons per minute?
5.
Is there a separate outfall pipe and NPDES permit for the sanitary sewage 11guld wastes as distinct from the fuel pool or spray pond wastes?
Your response will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Mrs. Leo A. Drey (Kay) i 801204089
