June 7,1978 Honorable Joseph M. Hendrie Chairran U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, DC 20555 REPORE ON PAINE YANKEE A'ICMIC POWER STATICN
Dear Dr. Hendrie:
During its 218th meeting, June 1-2, 1978, the Advisory Comittee on Re-actor Safegue.rds ccepleted its review of the application by the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Cmmy for authorization to operate the Maine Yan-kee Atomic Power Station at pcwer levels up to 2630 Mi(t). A subcom-mittee reeting on this ratter was held in Washington, D. C. on May 25, 1978. The Com.nittee had previously reported favorably on operation of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station at power levels up to 2440 Mf(t) in its report of January 13, 1972. During this revieu, the Co=nittee had the benefit of discussions with representatives of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company, Yankee Atmic Electric Ccupany, Ccmbustion Engi-neering Incorporated, and the Nuclear Regulatory Comission Staff. 'Ihe Comittee also had the benefit of the docu::ents listed.
In the NRC Staff review of the recuest to increase power, analyses of accidents and transients, physics tests, fuel perforrance and site me-teorology were carried out. Modifications to the Technical Specifica-tions were also considered. In addition, the NRC Staff reviewed the operating history of the plant. In evaluating the proposed power in-crease in each of these areas, the NRC Staff used current NRC criteria.
The NRC Staff has concluded that operation at the proposed power level in accordance with the proposed Technical Specifications is acceptable.
The ACRS concurs.
The Advisory Co=nittee on Reactor Safeguards believes thz.t there is rea-sonable assurance that the Maine Yankee Atomic Poaer Station can be oper-ated at power levels up to 2630 M4(t), without undue risk to the health and safety of the public.
Sincerely, WY
