Subject:
[External_Sender] Docket No. 72-1050; NRC-2016-0231 Waste Control Specialists LLCs / ISPs Consolidated Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility Project
Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission,
The dangerous proposal to bring 40,000 tons of high-level radioactive nuclear waste from reactors around the country to be stored above ground in West Texas is currently moving forward with little to no acknowledgement of the valid concerns of Texas communities that would be put at grave risk if this project were to be approved.
There has not been a single public meeting on the revised application, and only one meeting in Andrews (hundreds of miles from major cities that would be impacted by rail transport of radioactive waste) for the original application.
Resolutions opposing the radioactive waste repository plan and transport were passed by the Dallas, Bexar, Nueces and Midland counties, as well as the cities of Denton and San Antonio, yet the NRC has failed to host meetings in any of these locations.
By contrast, five NRC meetings were held in New Mexico regarding the company Holtec's proposal for a high-level nuclear repository and twenty-four meetings were held in Nevada for Yucca Mountain.
In addition, the site itself is in an area that is hydrologically and geologically complex, including fissures, sinkholes, major and minor aquifers, and other nearby land uses such as ranching and oil and gas development. Storing high-level waste in West Texas only to have to potentially move it again would be add more risk to the public and the environment.
I urge you to please extend intervention and public comment deadlines by at least 180 days to allow for public input, in addition to hosting public meetings in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Midland and Andrews.
Doing this will demonstrate the wide-spread, statewide opposition to such a dangerous proposal and confirm what Texans from communities across the state know about being a dumping ground for high-level nuclear waste: We don't want it!
Sincerely, Rock Morris 1110 Guildford St Garland, TX 75040 rmorris@rockmorris.com (972) 675-6017
