. Mr. Steven E. Miltenberger

Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer

P. 0. Box 236

Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038

Dear Mr. Miltenberger:

OCT o 1 1992

SUBJECT:

SALEM AND HOPE CREEK RESIDENT INSPECTION NOS. 50-272/92-12;

50-311/92-12; 50-354/92-12

This letter transmits the findings of an inspection to assure public health and safety,

conducted by Mr. T. Johnson, Senior Resident Inspector and other members of the NRC

resident and regional staff at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations for the

period between July 26 and September 12, 1992. The findings of this inspection were

previously discussed with Messrs. C. Vondra and J. Hagan of your staff.

Within the scope of this inspection, the inspectors noted two non-cited violations at Salem.

The details of these issues are discussed in the report. In both cases, prompt and appropriate

corrective actions permitted us to exercise discretionary enforcement for these self-identified

violations. In addition, this inspection documents an apparent increase in the personnel error .

rate at Salem. This concern appears to have received proper attention by your staff to effect

improved performance in this area. However, this* matter will continue to be monitored and

assessed by our office. No reply to this letter is required.

Your cooperation with us is appreciated:

Sincerely,

EDWARD C. WENZINGER
