Dear Nr. Utley:
Subject:
Confirmatory Piping Analysis and Design Documentation Review for Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant'i By NRC Mechanical Engineering Branch (MEB)
Confirmator Pi in Anal sis NEB has implemented a program of performing an independent confirmatory piping analysis for plants undergoing OL"review.
For the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, this analysis will be performed by our contract personnel tat Pacific Northwest Laboratory.
The purpose of this independent analysis will be to verify that the subject piping system meets the applicable ASIDE Code stress criteria, supports are adequately designed for their loads, and vendor allowables have been met.
lie do not intend to resolve differences between our calculated stresses and loads and those calculated by you for Shearon Harris unless Code criteria, support design loads, or vendor allowables are,'not satisfied.
This program will allow HEB to verify on a sampling basis that you have met the AStlE Code stress requirements, have met vendor interface requirements.
and have"adequately fulfilled acceptance criteria for the NRC regulatory guides and review plans incorporated in their design.

Desi n Documentation Review As discussed at our site visit, we are planning to perform an audit of your design specifications and design reports as part of our licensing review under Standard
.Review Plan 3.9.3.
Ite plan to review the ASIIIE required design specifications for completeness and the design reports for assurance that the selected component meets the condition stated in the design specification. a Our review:.will include the design specification and the respective design report for the following components:
l.
a pump 2.
a va'Ive 3.
'a piping system, and 4.
a component support.
Discussions will be held with your staff regarding specific component design documents which are available for review.
Subsequently, a meeting is planned to perform an audit of the design documentation on conjunction with the meeting for confirmatory piping analysis.
Sincerely, cc:
