DEFERRAL OF IGSCC I~SPECTION PLANS OF TWO WELDS ON DRESDEN, UNIT 3 In your letter dated February 6, 1992, you requested to defer the scheduled ultrasonic examination of two welds,*located in the 28~' recirculation system, on Dresden, Unit 3, for.one refueling outage.
These welds, which are currently classified as Category 'G' welds in the intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) program, are between the cast stainless steel elbow-to-cast stain~ess steel pump body on each recirculation loop~
The staff has reviewed your r~quest and based on the information provided, agrees to a deferral of the examination for one outage.
In your letter it was also mentioned that CECo is pursuing an evaluation to justify the reclassf-fication of these *Welds to Category 'A' in the IGSCC program.
The NRC staff position on IGSCC in Generic.Letter 88-01 states that all Category 'A*' welds have to be inspected once every: 40 y.!=!ars.
Therefore, any changes to your *.
- plans tb examine those welds during;the next.refueling outage should be
- communicated to the staff in sufficient time for us to.evaluate the basis for
