UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 March 6, 2013 Mr. Michael Cordero Acting Tribal Chair Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation P.O. Box 4464 Santa Barbara, CA 93140-4464

Dear Mr. Cordero,

Thank you for your letter of February 12, 2013, voicing your concern over the renewal of the operating licenses for Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant (DCNPP), Units 1 and 2. The U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) values the importance of establishing and maintaining open lines of communication with concerned stakeholders.

At the request of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), the environmental review of the license renewal application for DCNPP has been delayed pending completion of seismic testing.

At this time, there is no projected schedule for resuming project activities. A schedule for completing the environmental review will be developed after PG&E submits the seismic evaluation.

The NRC is aware of the historic and cultural significance of the Pecho Coast and is committed to working with tribes, groups, or individuals with a vested interest in'the area during our review of the environmental effects of continued operation of DCNPP. The Native American Heritage Commission of California has identified the Coastal Band of the Chum ash Nation as a tribe with an interest in, and historical knowledge of, the area surrounding DCNPP. As such, the NRC will be in contact with you when the license renewal environmental review resumes.

Additionally. I invite you to subscribe to the DCNPP's reactor correspondence Listserv. This will allow you to receive the most current correspondence from the NRC regarding DCNPP. The Listserv website can be found at: http://www.nrc.gov/public-invclvellistserver/plants-by region.html.

M. Cordero
