SUBJECT:
MEETING
SUMMARY
FOR PUBLIC MEETING WITH SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON
Dear Mr. Dietrich:
On October 9, 2012, NRC personnel met with representatives of Southern California Edison and other public stakeholders at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Hotel in Dana Point, CA. The meeting was held to present and discuss the NRCs current regulatory oversight status of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, as well as allow a forum in which interested stakeholders could discuss their perspectives on the future operations of the plant.
During the meeting, the NRC heard from a number of stakeholders who were in support of future operations of the facility. Views expressed by these stakeholders included: lack of a safety-significant problem at the plant, the safe operating history of the utility, and the states need for the electrical power and jobs provided by the plant.
The NRC also heard from stakeholders who were generally in opposition to future operation of the facility. Views expressed by these stakeholders included: demand for a public hearing before future operations, insistence on a license amendment, high cost associated with repair or operation of the plant, lack of trust in the utility and/or the NRC, and various related environmental concerns.
The NRCs mission, by law, is to license and regulate the nations civilian use of certain nuclear materials in order to ensure the adequate protection of public health and safety, promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. On October 4, 2012, the NRC staff received Southern California Edisons letter of response to the March 27, 2012, Confirmatory Action Letter. The NRC will not make a decision regarding future operation of SONGS Unit 2 until a thorough evaluation of this material has been completed. The NRC will independently determine whether or not the information, analysis and actions provided by Edison constitute a solid technical basis for the resumption of power operation.
The meeting was recorded and copies of the recorded video, as well as written transcripts of the meeting will be made available on the NRCs website at http://www.nrc.gov/info-finder/reactor/songs/tube-degradation.html.
