SUBJECT:
Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-440, License No. NPF-58 Correction of Response to Generic Letter 2007-01 (TAC No. MD4363)
On February 7, 2007, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 2007-01, "Inaccessible or Underground Power Cable Failures That Disable Accident Mitigation Systems or Cause Plant Transients." The NRC issued the generic letter: to inform licensees that the failure of certain power cables can affect the furnctiori~lityof multipie
'ccidenýtmitifation
- systemso c'rause planttra'nsients; to inform licensees that in-the-absence of-adequate moniftor6ing ofcable insulationr,-,ý,-:--.-,
e quiplmeni could 'fail abruptlfydurinrg seviie'd, causi'ng pl'ant t'ransientS.Or disablihg' accident mitigation systems; and to ask licensees to provide information onthe monitoring of inaccessible or underground electrical cables. By letter dated May 8, 2007, the FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) provided a response to GL 2007-01 for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP).
In the response to GL 2007-01, FENOC stated that PNPP had a Predictive Maintenance Program in place that requires a Polarization Index (PI) test on 480 volt alternating current (VAC) motors and their power cables. On December 16, 2009, FENOC identified that this statement was potentially inaccurate and documented this issue in the corrective action program. On January 15, 2010, FENOC determined that PI testing is not performed on 480 VAC motors and their power cables nor was it performed at the time the response to GL 2007-01 was submitted. The statement that PI testing is performed on 4160 and 13,800 VAC motorsý'and their power cables is accurate and remains unaffected.
In accordance with 10 CFR 50.54(f), FENOC hereby submits this correction -to the PNPP* r~espo~nse, t6 GE 2007-01. *This`correction -does n6t alt&r the pr~vious'conclusion
