FROM: Mike Pacilio, Chief Operating Officer Joe Grimes, Senior Vice President, Mid-Atlantic Operations INSTRUCTIONS: Please share the following information with employees.
On Saturday afternoon, monitors inside the reactor building detected airborne radioactive contamination. We removed employees from the area and monitored and released them to go home.
There was no threat to the health or safety of the public or our employees. It is important to know that the situation at Three Mile Island has returned to normal and the workers are back working on numerous maintenance and refueling projects.
It is also important to know that the plant has been in a planned shutdown since Oct. 26. There is no fuel in the reactor, so this was not an operational issue.
The investigation into the cause of the contamination event is focused on actions inside containment involving air flow that may have stirred up contaminated particles. Just prior to the event, cutting was taking place on the steam generator piping while the reactor building ventilation lineup was changed.
All workers in the area have been tested to ensure that no one was harmed. No employee was injured and all tests confirmed that no one received any harmful dose of radiation.
Twelve individuals in the reactor building received a detectable amount of radiation. The highest initial estimated measurement was 38.4 millirem. (That's about 2% of the Exelon limit and less than 1% of the federal limit.)
By way of further context, a round trip flight to Japan can expose passengers to 10-20 millirem of radiation.
No contamination was found outside the reactor building and the event never posed a threat to public or employee health and safety.
During the event, work continued uninterrupted on various other maintenance projects at the plant associated with the outage. That work continues now.
Beginning Saturday afternoon we took a series of steps to voluntarily inform the media and local stakeholders as soon as we had information confirmed. These contacts and information distributions began immediately after the monitors sounded (to the NRC), continued throughout the evening and were completed by 11:30 p.m.
